Dear all,
We will be hosting Dr. Tamas Szuts of the Department of Ecology, Institute for Biology, University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest in a special seminar taking place on Tuesday, May 30th, from 2-3pm, in the seminar room in Berman.
Dr. Szuts's talk is titled " Quo vadis Eresus: integrative taxonomy of the genus":
Species of the genus Eresus Walckenaer, 1805 – commonly known as ladybird spiders – are well characterized by the males' distinct abdominal pattern. The bright red background with four to six dots is a rather uniform pattern within the genus with only a few exceptions. During my research I am focusing on those exceptions using both molecular and morphological data. One main question is whether the non-red species forming a monophyletic group or scattered among the red species. In the south Mediterranean, seemingly more of these species occur. During my stay here I would like to sample males with atypical abdominal coloration. We try to reconstruct the phylogeny of the genus based on 28S, 16S, H3 COI and ITS2 markers, which represents the first extended phylogeny for Eresus. In this lecture present our preliminary results, and its significance to the Levantine fauna.
A poster with the details of the talk is attached here. Please note that on that day we also have our regular department seminar at 12:00.
