Taxonomy: practical approaches to image management, expediting descriptions, and scientific illustration

Dr. Ivan L. F. Magalhaes, Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales “Bernardino Rivadavia”, Argentina

To participate, please register in this form until 21/02/2020.

The aim of the workshop is to present tools and to stimulate discussion on practices for optimizing the description of new taxa.

I will present some protocols for acquisition and management of images and voucher metadata, as well as some simple spreadsheets to aid in the preparation of taxonomic manuscripts. The discussions and methods should be relevant to most taxonomic groups. The workshop is intended to have a large practical component; it is suggested that participants bring a computer and their own data to work with throughout the course.

The workshop will take place at The National Natural History Collections, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Edmond J. Safra Campus, Jerusalem 9190401, Israel.

Workshop schedule

Day 1 (24/02/2020) – Image processing, vouchers, organizing descriptions, keys

Students will benefit from bringing their own data: images (photographs, electron microscopy images, drawings), lists of examined specimens, and their own specimen descriptions. It is desirable that each student brings a personal computer

9:00-10:00 General introduction to taxonomy.

10:00-11:00 Why make images? Images as illustrations vs. data sources. Image treatment. Practice: identifying problems in images.

11:00-12:00 Vouchers and metadata. Image tagging. Ontologies and standard views.

12:30-13:30 Lunch break.

13:30-14:30 Discussion: how do you keep your images and metadata? Practice: spreadsheets for image metadata. Batch processing.

14:30-15:00 Standard views: image repositories and linking of images to morphological matrices using SILK.

15:00-16:00 Practice: using spreadsheets to prepare “Examined material” lists and specimen descriptions.

16:00-17:00 Interactive keys using Xper.

Day 2 (25/02/2020) – Scientific illustration

The second day will be largely free for practice. Students are expected to bring something they would like to work on – either a small specimen to draw, or images to process using editing software (e.g. GIMP and InkScape), or images to mount taxonomic plates. Drawing paper and soft pencils will be provided but students are welcome to bring their own personal material if they like.

9:00-10:00 General introduction to scientific illustration.

10:00-12:30 Illustration practice.

12:30-13:30 Lunch break.

13:30-15:00 Illustration practice.

15:00-16:00 Closing remarks.

To participate, please register in this form until 21/02/2020.
